NGSS: LS2.D Social Interactions and Group Behavior: Being part of a group helps animals obtain food, defend themselves, and cope with changes. Groups may serve different functions and vary dramatically in size. I can identify and discuss the needs of animals in order to survive. I can investigate to find the benefits of gathering food as a group. I can identify the benefits fo working with a group for protection. I can describe how animal groupscope with changes within their environment. I can understand the reasons why different animals form different sized groups. I can apply what I have learned about animal groups and how they work in groups for survival. I can construct an argument that some animals for groups that help members survive. |

They must provide reasons why they choose that group. Good to use as a follow up to the "Gathering Food" experiment. ![]() ![]() PDF version of the lesson and experiment. Have students answer the follow up question on the Chromebooks using Padlet. "Would the Muskox calf protect itself from the wolf if it were not apart of the family group?" ![]() Website that gives the animal collective noun for almost every animal. Fun activity. Have the students pick one and write a story using that collective noun. Ex: A quiver of cobra. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Show students the Youtube video "Ducks Don't Get Wet" or read the book with the same title by A.Goldin. Then have students use this Adaptation Pixie to show what they know about animals that adapt. Option: Have them use ![]() |

Finally, the brainstorm ways the animal could adapt to the injury. ![]() ![]() Animal Behaviors and Defences This activity can be used as a center for review on animal behaviors. This will help build background knowledge for how animals protect themselves and why living in a group helps them survive. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Students use this Bee Postcard in Pixie to summarize what they learned about watching the video clip on Bees Protecting the Colony (Curriculum link: Bees in a Colony) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After watching the Discovery Education clip on Meerkat Colonies, have stuents use this Smart slide Meerkat Food Chain/ Web Smart to create a food chain or web based on the Meerkat lesson cards from Meerkat Lesson and Activity.
