Why do people migrate/move from one location to another?
Survivor Ellis Island: This PowerPoint goes through the steps that Immigrants to Ellis Island would have to go through in order to become an Immigrant and gives the students sceanarios of people for discussion on admission to the US.

Select a child and read his/her immigration story and watch his/her video. Use a multi-flow map to identify:

  • reasons why that child, and his/her family, chose to move to the United States and
  • the effects immigration has had on the child and his/her family.

  • Brainstorm reasons why people would move to Maryland. Why would people want to move to Anne Arundel County?
  • Use a circle map to gather ideas.

Website reviews types of conflicts and ways to have resolution. Reviews war and peace and humanitarian organizations. Option- have student create a literary graffiti (ReadWriteThink Literary Graffiti) to summarize and show learning from the website.


Cool School

Identify appropriate ways to resolve conflicts between friends. After completing the game, explain what was causing conflict and identify ways that a conflict can be resolved by crating a comic strip.

Create a comic strip that explains, through dialogue and images, how we can respect other people's differences.
