Unit 4

In Hot Water!!
boiling water

Essential Question:
How can you show that heat is transferred between objects? How can you demonstrate the relationship of water on Earth and in the atmosphere?

Enduring Understandings Resources
Thermodynamics: Heat and Heat Travel

Heat moves to cooler objects.

smartboard icon Heat Students will be able to explain how heat is created by participating in a variety of activities.

Insulate the Beaker Students will test different items to determine the best way to keep heat from transferring.

pixie iconHeat Transfer Flower Petals

(Pixie) Students will give multiple examples of heat transfer along with a visual representation of each.

Blacksmith's Job Students will read about a Blacksmith's job and practice using heat to twist metal.

The Ice Race  Students will explore how heat moves to cooler objects using ice.

Interactions of Hydrosphere and Atmosphere
Water and air are fundamental to life on Earth.
curriculum iconThe Water Cycle Students will watch an interactive flash animation of the water cycle.

Interactive Water Cycle Reading Passage Students will read a comprehension passage and fill in missing vocabulary words to demonstrate their understanding of the water cycle.

Heat Transfer - Students can explore the board about conduction, convection, and radiation. (Note: If the link does not open login to aacps.discoveryeducation.com)

Heat Transfer Song -
Students sing along with the lyrics to the song, "Water is like Magic", about how heat effects water.  (Note: If the link does not open login to aacps.discoveryeducation.com)

curriculum iconReal World Reading: The Air We Breathe Students will read in order to answer the question "How is the Earth's atmosphere changing? What problems are resulting from that change?"

pixie iconWater Cycle Creation

(Pixie) Students will create the water cycle by using pictures & apply knowledge of heat travel by recording themselves.

curriculum iconCareer In Science: Hydrologist Students will use information from the article to complete the pixie icon Wanted Poster (Pixie) that describes the job of a hydrologist, their education and student goals.

Save Smog City! Students will change variables (population, factories, weather, etc.) to determine the difference in air quality. Students will track changes in air quality using the Smog City Template (Kidspiration).
Required Lab: Heat Rocks

Resources

Student Outcome: Students will recognize and describe that heat will from between objects by conducting an experiment. smartboard icon Hot Rocks Line Graph
Students will create a line graph using data from the Hot Rocks Experiment.
Project: Water, Water Everywhere

Resources

Driving Question: What effect does temperature have on water?

Possible Resources for Student Research:

Consult with media specialists for online database resources and books:

discovery streaming iconcurriculum iconWater Smart (Third link for 11 minutes) Students will watch the video in order to describe the phases of water.
