Grade 3 Science Unit 5 Work Smarter, Not Harder
*Essential Question:* How do materials and design factors inpact the system? How does the designed system to work and could it be improved?

Enduring Understandings	Resources
Some features of designs are sacrificed to improve others. Each part in a well designed system is necessary for the system to work correctly.	Simple Machines Smartboard Activity Students will be introduced to simple machines such as pulleys, levers & inclined planes. The Compound Machine Students will help a robot accomplish his goal using simple machines. Throughout the activity, students answer multiple choice questions about simple machines. Simple Machines Response - The students will watch various video clips about simple machines and then write about how they are used in their own lives. Simple Machines in the Household Students will identify simple machines that are used in common environments. Real World Reading: Inventor Alleviates Pain for Others Students will read to answer the question "How do inventors pull from experience and raw from existing constructions?" Simple Machine Vortex Smartboard Activity Students will classify different machines into each of the simpler forms. Careers in Science: The Tools a Scientist Uses Students will choose a career and then infer what tools the scientist may use to help with the demand of their job. Careers in Science: Discover Engineering Students will learn about different types of engineering jobs. Invention Stories - Students read the stories behind common inventions, such as the yo-yo. Inventor Trading Card (Pixie) Students will use Pebble Go or another AACPS approved search engine to gain information about an inventor to create a trading card. Real World Reading: “Toothbrush is the King of Inventions” Students will read to answer the question "How do high and low tech devices affect lives?" Real World Reading: "You’re On a Roller Coaster" Students will read to answer the question "How does a roller coaster move along the track? Design a Roller Coaster Students will use this interactive website to design a roller coaster & record information (Ratings, Sacrifices, changes, etc) on the Trial Table (Pixie).

Student Outcome: Explore how to make work easier by conducting an investigation of simple machines. Project: Charm City Challenge	Resources
Student Outcome: Design and analyze a structure while considering design constraints by creating a model of a skyscraper.	Possible Resources for Student Research: Consult with media specialists for online database resources and books: Baltimore and its buildings Students will use the website to identify buildings around Baltimore.
