This option is beneficial for students who have difficulty with language or need vocabulary development.  Show the class an image (Powerpoint or Google Slides).  After seeing the image, have students complete Looking 10 x 2 Strategy” (Document to all Artful Thinking Routines)  Then show students another image and have students do “Looking 10 x 2 Strategy” again with second image.  Then using their notes, compare and contrast the two images. Unit 5 - Research Project Idea #1

In this unit you will learn about various habitats around the world.

Unit 5 Research Question:
If you could choose any natural habitat in the world to visit, which would you choose? Why? What wildlife lives there?
 
Part 1: Create a circle map in PowerPoint or SMART Notebook where you will gather your information. Use the resources below to gather information. Create a bibliography citing the resources you use. You can use Cite this Form, an online resource.

Part 2: Organize your notes from the circle map into a Tree Map using Inspiration, Smart Notebook, or PowerPoint.

Part 3: Decide how you want to present your information to your class. This could be in poster form, brochure, slideshow or video. Programs to use include:
                              - Publisher-  best for posters or brochures

                              - PowerPoint- best for slideshows or posters

Unit 5 - Research Project Idea #2

Unit 5 Research Question: What makes a habitat unique?

You are going to choose a habitat to research that is found in Maryland.  After you complete your research, you are going to become a defender of that habitat and let others know why the conservation of this habitat is important.  In your message to others, you will need to include the following:

  • Write about the importance of conserving wildlife habitat making sure to include information about plants and animals found in this habitat
  • Write about the need to stop polluting the land, air and water found in this habitat
  • Write about the necessity of making laws that protect endangered species that live within this habitat

You will utilize what you learned about writing persuasively as become the defender to conserve this habitat.

Follow the step for the IIM Research Model. 

Step 1: Choose a topic.

Step 2: Smartboard Goal setting - Write good questions to research.

Step 3: Research - Use links below and resources from the library and from your classroom teacher to research. Use what you know to take notes and record source information accurately. Make sure to add new vocabulary you learned to the focus board.

Step 4: Organize your research into categories. Use Thinking Maps such as a tree, flow or circle map to organize your thinking. Set aside irrelevant information.  Synthesize new information before products are made. 

Step 5: Evaluate if you have enough information from at least 2 sources for each of the questions for your research. If not, go back and research some more.

Step 6: Create a project - Choose from a list of possible products.  Make sure to match your product with your potential audience.
