Unit 3

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes!
solar oven pizza box

Essential Question:

How does temperature effect the observable properties of matter?

Enduring Understandings Resources
Heating or cooling matter causes it to change its state.

States of Matter

Students will describe the effect that changes in temperature have on the properties of materials by heating and cooling various materials.

curriculum iconStates of Matter Review PowerPoint (PowerPoint) Students will look at pictures and choose whether the impage depicts a solid, liquid or gas.

curriculum iconReal World Reading: History of Maple Syrup Students will read to answer the question: How does heating change maple tree sap?

curriculum iconMighty Metals This book from ConnectEd describes many ways metal is softened to make jewelry and hardened for building bridges.

Science Clips-Solids and Liquids
Use this interactive site to explore how heating and cooling change the state of matter of solids and liquids.

Energy Forms and Changes Students will build their own energy system and explore how heat, cooling and energy relate to one another in making machines operate.

Thermal Energy Students will explore how heat changes an object's state of matter.

Pirate Wars Review - Unit 3

smart notebook iconcurriculum iconChanging Matter Vortex Activity
Students will classify matter changing scenarios based on whether heating or cooling was necessary.

Matter in Art (PowerPoint) - Arts Integration Lesson: Students will look at paintings by Joan Miro and ask themselves what state of matter is represented. Teacher will encourage students to explain by asking "What makes you say that?"

Matter Changes in Dance (PowerPoint) - Arts Integration Lesson: Students will discuss the dance moves that will associated with each state of matter and will transition into each stage. Teacher and students will discuss what makes these states of matter change.

Polar Bears & Changes in Matter - Students will view a video clip about climate changes and describe what change in matter is happening and the effects on the wildlife and environment.

Changing the State-Changing states of matter by adding heat or cold.

ice cube melt iconIce Cube Melt Journal  (Pixie) Students will record their observations of the ice cube melt activity by using written, visual or oral explanation.

Changing Matter Students will determine how particles change when heat is increased.

Heating & Cooling Molecules Students will determine how particles change when heated or cooled. Student must click "Run Now" to show simulation.

Required Lab: That Was Cool!

Resources

Student Outcome: Describe the effect that temperature has on matter by testing freeze pops at different temperatures.
Thunderbolt Kids Dissolving and how heat impacts states of matter with questions for students.
Project: Butter My Biscuit!

Resources

Student Outcome: Create a solar oven to demonstrate the effect of heat on matter.
